The acquisition of Courir by JD Sports marks a significant milestone in the competitive landscape of the European sportswear market. Negotiations began in the spring of 2023, setting the stage for an acquisition that was publicly revealed in May and finalised by September. Although the precise figures remain shrouded in mystery, it is known that JD Sports offered a generous sum for the acquisition, combining cash and debt obligations amounting to around €520 million. This financial ballet was disclosed to the market with an assurance that their current hit will pave the way for future growth within Europe, spearheaded by the experienced team that includes Courir’s Director, Pierre Chambaudrie.

Notably, the acquisition reflects JD Sports’ recognition of the distinctive clientele of Courir; where JD’s customer base skews younger and more male, Courir appeals to an older, more feminine audience. Currently boasting 323 stores across several European nations and additional franchises worldwide, Courir’s established presence offers JD a unique strategic advantage in broadening their reach.

Despite the excitement surrounding this venture, JD Sports had to navigate the labyrinth of European regulatory scrutiny, which ultimately approved the merger but imposed conditions. They must divest 15 Courir stores in France and 6 in Portugal, ensuring the competitive landscape remains intact. These stores, while still branded as Courir, are set to change hands to Snipes by the first quarter of 2026.

As JD Sports continues to expand its empire, which already includes a recent acquisition of American competitor Hibbett for a staggering $1.1 billion, the company reports thriving numbers, with revenues soaring beyond £10.4 billion in 2023.
